2014 Mueller Zinfandel, "Old Vine", Russian River Valley

2014 Mueller “Old Vine” Zinfandel

Russian River Valley

Fermentation:     Aged in 100% French oak, 100% ML fermentation

Bob’s Notes:        The 2014 vintage “Old Vine” Zinfandel is a delicious blend.  Ninety-Eight years ago, when the Mueller “Old Vine” vineyard was planted, it was a mix of over 85% Zinfandel, with a dash of other varieties for seasoning such as Petite Sirah, Grenache, Mourvedre and even a white variety for spice.  This is called a “Field Blend” varietal, meant to be harvested at one time and fermented together to produce a unique, "one of a kind" wine.  Our 2014 Zinfandel is that style of wine. Pour a glass and let the wine open for a few minutes.  Raspberries, red cherry and pepper will entice you to take a sip.  The same ripe aromas will echo in the flavors and a pleasant burst of ripe tannins will coat your tongue and extend the pleasure.  Limited use of new oak ensures the maximum impact from this unique and utterly enjoyable Zinfandel.

General Notes:    Our 2014 Russian River Valley zinfandel is produced from a single block vineyard, planted in 1915, located near the eastern border of the Russian River Valley appellation. This vineyard only partially experiences the cooling impact of fog from the Russian River due to its distance from the water. The fruit is harvested in the cool morning hours and transported to the winery (about 20 minutes away) for crushing into our small, two-ton custom designed fermenting tanks.  A portion of juice is fermented using pure strain yeast while the balance ferments spontaneously with wild (indigenous) yeast.  During fermentation, we punch down the cap by hand several times each day to gently extract the grapes flavors and aromas.  The wine is aged in French oak barrels, of which about 25% are new.
